Hi,
I have a viper 550esp, with the following remote setup:
I:   lock/unlock/panic
II: trunk release
III: used
IV: used
What I would like to do is be able to remote start my
parents' car (that has a 550hf). Do I need an additional
channel to be able to do so?....or is there a way
around the fact that I'm out of channels? [:)]

No, you dont need additional channels to control your parents alarm, just make sure the remotes are compatible. Your remote usea 4 button with Green LED on it, if you parents remote has a Red Led it wont work. as far as you alarm goes its a four channel reciever. dou you need more channels?? Message me if you need any help.

Yes, my remote is a 4-button with a green LED, and their
remote is a 2-button with a green LED as well.
How do I program my remote to start their car, and not
my own, everytime I hit a certain button. Or how can
I lock/unlock their car without locking my own if my
car is parked next to it.
And yes, I want more channels :-) I've filled up
the four channels on my alarm already, and there's
more I'd like to do....but that's a different story.
Thanks:-)

you will have to erase remote and reprogram both remotes. I have different set up for my two cars and only one remote . Do you have install manual??? if not get it at www.directed.com and look for intallation guides to program

 your remote

button 1                        lock, unlock, panic                                   1st car

button 2                        2nd channel (trunk release)                  1st car
button 1+2                    3rd channel (remotestart)                     1st car
button 1+3                           channel 4                                             1st car
button 3                        lock\unlock\panic                                     2nd car
button 4                        2nd channel ( trunk release )                2nd car
button 3+4                   3rd channel ( remote start)                    2nd car
button 2 + 4                  channel 4                                                    2nd car

remember this is for one remote to control both car, Of course do it the same way for your parents remote if you want them to control you alarm.

Sometimes the remotes that come with your alarm might not have that many option on the remote, you can order a 16 channel one from DEI for 20 --

I
II
III
IV
I + II
I + III
I + IV
II + III
II + IV
III + IV
I + II + III
I + II + IV
II + III + IV
IV + III + I

Thats all the combos i can think of but there is 2 more

Wow, thanks for the replies!
1. Ok, quick stupid question: When you guys say button I and II,
does that mean at the "same time", or does that mean I and
then II quickly? I'm assuming it's the first choice.
It would seem tough to me (for the 16-channel remote)
to hit 3 buttons at the same time, though.
2. Currently, my remote is setup for "single button
configuration", where I'll only be hitting I, II, III, or
IV separately, and never any combinations of those four.
If I erase it and reprogram it to my parent's car, will
I have to go to "standard configuration" since I'll be
hitting combinations of buttons?
3. Is the listing that you posted changeable? In other
words, is the way you listed it the way it will be, or
can I program the buttons however I want? I'm just curious
because I would like to keep 1-4 for my car, and then
the combinations for their car.
Thanks for the replies...it's really been helpful! [:D]

1         yes at the same time

2          you will have to change the configuation, don't erase your parents  remotes , just program your remote to operate their car. and let them use their remote any way they have it. unless you want them to control you car.

3      Yes, you can do any buttons you want, hey if you want to lock, unlock, panic by pressing all 4 buttons at the same time, hey be my guest .  Am I out of channels? -- posted image.

P.S. here is a Pdf file for you installation manual. Good luck.

Thanks so much Bnluis....you rock.
Ok, just to beat this to death some more (and make sure I do it right),
here's how the two cars are setup (I'm being "wordy" for my own sake):
My remote (4-button)
I: Lock/Unlock/Panic
II: Channel 2
III: Channel 3
IV: Channel 4
My parents' remote (2-button)
I: Lock/Unlock/Panic
II: Channel 2 (Trunk)
III: Channel 3 (Remote Start)
I would like to keep them exactly as is, except be able to control
my parents' car with my remote...so I would like to have (for my remote):
My buttons I & II control their alarm's Channel I   (Lock/Unlock/Panic)
My buttons II & IV control their alarm's Channel III (remote start)
So...for the programming....
I'll be using page 33 of that 550esp manual....
1. I have to clear my remote, so the first thing I
do is go to channel 10, and then program any button
to clear the remote.
2.   Now I'll program my remote for my car...
Go to Channel I... hit remote button I
Go to Channel II...hit remote button II
Go to Channel III..hit remote button III
Go to Channel IV...hit remote button IV
3. My remote is programmed for my car...done.
4. Go to my parents' car, and go into programming mode.
5. Go to Channel   I...hit remote button I & II on MY remote.
Go to Channel III...hit remote button II & IV on MY remote.
6. Now my remote is programmed for their car...done.
Phew...sorry for all of that....but to be honest, after typing it all I
think I get it a little better :-)

Thanks for all the help...I programmed it last night
and got everything to work perfectly :-)
I don't really like the idea of hitting two buttons at
once, though, because who knows when you might mess up
and not know it...thereby opening the locks on your
other car :) Oh well, I won't be doing it that often
anyway, but thanks again.
