New to the forum!
Have a 2006 Ford Taurus that came without a factory keyless entry system. Am planning on putting one in myself.
The Bulldog KE 1702 looks pretty easy. Have read all the features but haven't seen two items. Does it come with a Panic function that can be programmed and an ignition controlled lock/unlock feature?? Have looked at the RS1200 Remote Starter and it does have the ignition controlled lock/unlock, but don't know whether I want to hook up a remote starter!

That's an easy enough car to do a basic keyless entry in. The lock, unlock and parking light wires are right above the front edge of the carpet, the trunk-release switch pops right out........you could actually do the whole job without even taking the car apart, if you wanted.
I'm not familiar with Bulldog products. I installed one of their remote starters, and I wasn't particularly impressed, although their pricing is very good.
Regardless of the brand, I wouldn't buy any unfamiliar product without being able to see the installation guide first. A good manufacturer will make the guide available on their site, in my opinion.
Anyway, get hold of the installation manual..........see if the unit has a horn output, and if it does, it probably has panic.
Next, in the install manual, look at the section where you program all of the features and settings, and see if there's an on/off selection for ignition-controlled doorlocks. If you don't see it there, it probably doesn't have it.
P.S. If the model with remote start is a little more expensive, but it has the extra features you're looking for......you could always choose to pay the extra to get what you want, and just not hook up the remote start features. No reason you can't use it just as a keyless entry.

Chris,
Thanks for the info!!
No the Bulldog 1702 keyless has no horn output so I guess that's not an option. Also nothing in the operation about ignition controlled lock. Oh well on to other systems!
I was also looking at the Clarion K20 and Autopage KE-120 keyless systems. The Clarion has a decent installtion manual but I'm confused about a few items. The Autopage seems pretty stingy with theirs.
You also answered another question I had--if I bought a system with remote start do I have to hook up that portion if I don't want to!

That Clarion K20 (I looked on Google) looks like a DEI piece to me.....DEI (who makes Viper, etcetera) bought them out, I believe.
DEI makes a good keyless entry, but also, since it's popular, if you get stuck, many people on the forum will know what it is, and be able to help you.
You could buy something weird and imported on eBay and maybe save ten or twenty dollars, but then since none of us will be familiar with it, if you're stuck we might not be able to help much.
I haven't installed an Autopage, but they have a good reputation too.
I install Audiovox where I work. Good reliable product, poorly written install manuals.
But seriously, if you don't care about getting all fancy (like making unlock only the driver's door on the first press), it's going to be pretty easy. Should only be seven wires if I'm counting right (lock, unlock, trunk, horn, parking lights, constant, and ignition).
You do have tools to take the car apart, as well as a test light or a multimeter and the knowledge to test wires for power and ground, right?

Chris,
Yep should have what I need for an install. Worked Avionics for 35 years for the Air Force Reserve and did lots of wire maintenance and troubleshooting. Have my trusty multimeter handy and sure hope I can figure out power & ground!!!
Have decided to take your advice and probably will purchase a remote start. Have taken a liking to the Compustar 1WAMAS. It's reasonably priced and seems to have all the features I want--plus a few extra!!
Will do more reading here on the forum to check on the Compustar products before purchasing though. Hopefully it's not one of those weird and imported systems you find on Ebay--is it??

See I can't edit my posts so I'll update. Actually after some reading I have two remote starts in mind, the Compustar 1WAMAS and the UltraStar 1270tl.
Both would appear at least from my reading to be fairly easy to install and reasonably cheap! Am I wrong with that assumption??

Have a 2006 Taurus I'm going to put a remote start/keyless entry system on. Am I going to have to incorporate a bypass module to remote start my vehicle seeing as it has an factory anti-theft on it??
Recommendations would be appreciated, especially if you have experience with the Fords!!
Have added a separate post for the possible systems I'm looking at.

Here are the few I'm considering at this point. I have never done one of these installs, but have extensive aircraft wiring experience so I know my way around a multimeter!
Compustar 1WAM-S
Ultrastar 1700, 1800, 2280
These seem to have the features I want plus their install manuals are readily available online. Any comments about these systems??
Thanks!!

yes you will need to bypass the PATS system in that car in order for it to remote start 556u would work for you. I install the ford products the 8L3Z-19G365-BA would work and you wouldnt lose a key in a box just program the module to your keys you will need 2 working keys to program it though

Avionics eh? That's pretty cool. A friend of mine has his private pilot's license, and has taken me up with him a few times.
He hopes to someday make a homebuilt airplane, and says he already wants me to be the one to wire it up. But that'd be way in the future.
Any nice avionics sites or forums you know of?
I've installed a few Compustars and a couple of Ultrastarts, and I've liked them both. Both are popular brands, not cheapie eBay stuff, and you'll find plenty of forum members here with experience in either brand.
I'll give my opinion, but bear in mind that my experience with both brands is limited.
Ultra: Very installer-friendly, not too many wires, and the LED and valet/programming switch are built into the antenna, which is a nice touch. I think their units are very basic (which could be a good thing for a beginner).
Compustar: Incredibly well-made, so much so that you'll notice it right away. The casing for the brain, the supple wires, and all the connectors lock in place (so they can't be pulled out without undoing the catch).
Also, with Compustar, you can later on buy a package of a new antenna, and longer-range or two-way remotes, and easily upgrade your system whenever you want. (Not sure if Ultra does this now too.)
Compustar also has loads of extra inputs and outputs that you can configure to do all kinds of things. This could be great, or could be confusing, depending on your point of view.
P.S. Do you have both keys for this Taurus? It's an almost-certainly you'll need both keys available to program whatever type of immobilizer bypass you end up using. Although if you only have one key, there's always a way.
P.P.S. Just did an alarm/starter combo in my girlfriend's 2000 Taurus, which is the same style as yours. Let me know if you get stuck finding any of the wires.
