Hi -
My daughter's car (a 2010 Mazda 3) got broken into last night. Nothing taken, and just one side window broken, but I'd like to do my best to prevent a recurrence. She'll be going to college in a year, and I imagine that wherever she lands, a good security system would be a smart idea.
Can someone give any recommendations on a good system? I don't think she needs a remote starter; just a good system to deter break-ins.
Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for the suggestion. How good are the installation instructions?

Dude, I just finished reading a number of DEI alarm threads, I have a headache.

OP . . . Don't make Howie scream, do you all the homework ahead of time and make sure you have the wiring diagrams for the vehicle and alarm, and make a map of the connections.

Or easier, take it some place and cough up the $ to get it done and over with.

DEI sounds a lot like DIE when you arent properly prepared.

Maybe that should be my sig line?

I was hoping for some detailed instructions, but it doesn't sound like they come with the alarm.
What is DEI, anyway?

Directed Electronics, Inc

They make most every alarm that you've ever heard of, even if you think they are competitors.

Click the drop down for Directed Brands - http://www.directed.com/Products/Default.aspx

Since they want you to have one of their licenced installers do the work, they are lean on providing documentation as reflected on their main site.

However, the install manuals can be obtained *cough*. The12v.com also sells CDs with guides.

The vehicle wiring info is found here for free, BUT ONLY THROUGH 2009 - https://www.the12volt.com/carsecurity/carsecurity.asp

or - https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/appguide_masterlist.asp

A 2010 Mazda 3 may or not be the same as a 2009 model.

Don't worry, I won't scream YET because I haven't done enough 09 on Ford Fiestas to act clever, wait till 12 model year when the Focus gets re-united across the Atlantic (styling and electrics), then all the Fords, Mazdas and smaller Volvos will be the same.

every installer has their own preferance, as many know, i have had no luck with DEI stuff. all the units i have done crapped out pretty quick.

i use compustar units and have yet to have a problem (fingers crossed)

every installer has their own prefrences on brands and models to use. i'm a certified DEI installer and havent had any major issues with their stuff. as posted before, you should always have any car electronics installed by a pro for a limited need to worry if its installed correctly and also so you dont void your warranty. all of DEI products come with a lifetime warranty. a Clifford Matrix 1x or avital 3300 would be good options. add a 508d proximity sensor and your protected. if you came to my shop those would be the best options i could give you
