parking light on econoline

I am currently starting to install an alarm system on a 1997 Ford Econoline. I have found the parking light wire which is brown colored (and according to info here at 12volt.com it should be brown + ) along side the driver side kick panel and extends backwards towards the rear of the van. It shows +12v when the parking switch is on but when I tried to apply +12v to it, I can't get the parking lights to turn on. I looked behind the switch and there is no equivalent brown colored wire. I think it is a very simple thing I missed but on a previous import I installed an alarm system in, I simply applied +12v to the parking wire and it turns on. If anyone can point me to the right direction as to how to tap into it to make it turn on I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

I found the 6 pin connector with brown wire also and it tests the same just like the other brown wires. Is R/S Rear and side ? The rear and side parking lights do supply +12v but I don't know what amperage. How do I test for amperage?

The alarm is an Avital 3100L. It has + or jumper adjusted - output for light flash. The instruction says i would need to switch it to - if the vehicle requires a - output or if the parking light circuit draws 10 amps or more (which needs a relay ). But I haven't gotten as far as to connect anything to the alarm. I am just testing for the parking light wire with a voltmeter. And also apply a + current directly to the brown wire so make sure the parking light comes on. So far there is no response when I do that. Although when I turn on the switch for parking light, the light comes on and I can measure +12v on the brown wire. Basically I can't turn on the parking light when I give the brown wire + current.

Thanks to your last post (and definitely it wasn't a dumb question, since I am the one who is a rookie at this), I rechecked the testing method and found a very elementary mistake.I finally got the parking light to turn on when I applied current to the brown wire. I did use a fused long wire but at the testing end I used a test light to do the actual contact with the brown wire. When I repeated it with only the long wire directly to the brown wire, the parking lights turned on. I won't make that same mistake again. Also I found the brown wire at the light switch. I mistaken it for a black wire earlier and now with proper lighting it is definitely brown. After that, I wired up the alarm's parking light output to the brown wire and also connected the constant +, acc +, ground, and led accordingly. Once power was given, the led was lit. But when I press the remote, the parking light didn't flash and the unit seemed to turn itself off. Then I disconnected power and reconnected it and it did the same thing when I pressed the remote. As you mentioned in the last post, my alarm is capable of a 10 amp, +12v parking light output so I shouldn't need a relay for it. I am not sure what I connected wrong yet but it was getting late so I will recheck tomorrow.
