1997 explorer door lock

Installing a remote start in my brothers explorer and I am stumped as to how to wire the door locks. It has power locks but no keyless entry. I am green when it comes to relays so please point me in the right direction as how to wire this to get the locks to work with the remote start. Many thanks.

I am sort of in the same boat, but I know there is tons of wiring diagrams on here for different vehicles. You should post the year of that Ford Explorer so that we can better help you. Also would probably help to have the model of the alarm you are using.

The info below, provided by Ready Remote, indicates that your Explorer has Type B (-) door

locks.  Test and verify this info with a Digital Multi Meter.  Set DMM to 20V DC, connect Red test
lead to +12V constant and the Black test lead to the suspect wire.  The DMM should read +12V
when the signal is present.  If this is accurate, you will be able to directly connect your R/S systems'
lock output wires to the trucks wires below ( no relays needed ).

Power Lock Pink / YELLOW  (-)       @ driver kick panel   

Power Unlock        Pink/Green  (-)       @ driver kick panel

thanks for the replys. It is a 1997 Ford explorer xlt. I have all the wires found per the wiring diagrams I found here but I was told I need relays for them to work. Was wondering if it is true or not. And if it is true how do I wire the relays up?

Need some more info.  What brand / model of R/S system are you installing in the 1997 Explorer?  ( Some

units have built in lock relays.)

Next I would actually verify / test the vehicles lock and unlock wires with a DMM.   The 4 wiring references I have

available do not specifically mention the need for relays on this vehicle as they do on some others that have the
Type B (-) lock system and do need relays.   The basic Type B lock systems don't need relays and function well
with just the R/S's standard 200mA lock outputs.  I can't remember doing a '97 Explorer to be sure.

It won't hurt anything if you do want to use relays.  The easiest way is to get a DEI 451M module ( under $10 ) and follow

Wiring Diagram B on Page 2 of the install guide.  Here is a link :  https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/file.asp?ID=726

If you want to wire up your own relays, here is a link to an Ultra Start Install guide that has a diagram of that relay

set-up :  http://www.ultrastarters.com/manuals/U-72-INSTALL-2011.7.22.pdf    Go to Page 14.  The top diagram
would be the standard direct wiring I suggested above.  The second diagram shows the use of added relays to
"strengthen" the ground signal.  ( It should be labeled "Negative Door Lock - High Current" )

The G11 series has built in overload protection on the door lock outputs as per this excerpt from the

install guide :
OVERLOAD PROTECTION:
All negative outputs are overload protected.  Example: Lock, Unlock, Dis-arm, Re-arm, etc...
If an output is overloaded the system will shutdown and flash the Park Lights 9 times slowly.

So it should be safe to connect the G11 wires directly to the vehicles verified Type B (-) door lock

wires.  Then test for reliable and proper functionality.
