"why do i need to hook this up or what it does"
A lot of the newer units out there have both siren outputs and a horn output. It is an added security feature because if someone cut your siren wires the horn would continue sounding until they either cut that connection or disabled the system all together. Also certain systems the siren will ONLY go off when the alarm is tripped and they use the horn for arm/disarm chirps and light touch shock sensor chirps. Really depends on your unit, but as you mentioned if everything works you should be fine. Normally the horn is a lot louder and grabs more attention (in my opinion) than a siren does so it never hurts to hook up both. Good luck,
Mike
