I am installing a remote starter in a 1997 Dodge diesel truck.  Im tring to find a neutral safty switch.  The instructions came with the starter say to find a wire the show -12VDC when in Park or Neutral.  I cannot find such a wire? Does it exist?  It also says that I can use the parking brake switch instead, but this too, also must show -12VDC or ground when the brake is set.  The swittch on the top of the parking break always shows ground regardless of the position.  I think the starter circuit runs through this normally open switch, but I'm not sure.  Any help would be great, thanks

I don't believe you need to wire that unless you had a 96 or older Dodge Dakota. You can either wire it directly to ground or to a toggle switch and then ground. The switch would allow you to disable remote starting (valet) if you lent your vehicle or had it serviced. To be safe though when your all wired up put the key in and unlock the transmission. Place the shifter in drive and be ready to press the brake. Now try remote starting. Also try it with the shifter in reverse. If it attempts to start then you'll need to try to find a nuetral safety switch again and wire it in but I'm pretty sure you shouldn't need it.

hi,

a '96 ram with automatic has a park/neutral position switch. would think a '97 would be the same. it is BLACK/ white at power distribution center starter relay, or at the PCM.  16 pin black connector, cavity 4 at distribution center or black pcm connector, cavity 6.  hope this helps.

The alarm does not have a Wait to start wire input on the module.  Could I use this "neutral safety switch"  wire as a " wait to start" signal on a crimeguard 850I 4.  Does the alarm only look for this signal once prior to starting, or attempting to start or is it a constant monitoring of this signal?  If I cant use neutral safety wire I could ground it so it gets -12VDC all of the time, but how can I input the "wait to start" into  the alarm, for the diesel engine.

From looking in the owner's manual, here is what i found. Just click here for the manual.
It appears to me that it most likely has like a 30 second wait to start mode by setting it for Diesel. At least that's what I've seen on some other brands that don't use a specific input wire. Here is an excerpt from the owner's manual....
Feature #27 Gasoline Or Diesel Engine
(Factory Default Setting Gasoline)
This feature changes the system's timing of the ignition and starter output
sequence for remotely starting vehicles with a diesel engine.
Programming Gasoline or Diesel Engine:
Follow Steps 1 to 4 on page 28; at Step 4 the Valet Switch will be pressed and
released twenty seven times. The system’s response will be twenty seven siren
chirps, and the Status Light flashing twenty seven times, pausing, then repeating.
Within 10 seconds, press and release the transmitter/transceiver’s "Arm/Lock"
button to configure the system for gasoline engines (the siren will chirp once)
or the "Disarm/Unlock" button to configure the system for diesel engines (the
siren will chirp twice).
I hope that helps you and answers your question. Post your results.
Thanks, Steve

Thanks iskidoo and ween for your posted comments.  I grounded the wire,  programmed the alarm for a diesel.  It does have a built in wait time.  The alarm and  the starter work great.   Thanks again for the advice
