Bear with me here as I'm kind of new to this,I have a '95 Chevy Caprice and ever since moving to the city my vehicle has been vandalized way too much. I'm looking for an alarm system that has a few features that I've seen on other vehicles,first I want to know if one exists that is not the standard continuous annoying alarm that stays on until the owner turns it off but only stays on long enough to make some noise to draw attention to the vehicle long enough to hopefully drive intruders off. I've also recently seen one that makes intermittent sounds if one gets too close to the vehicle,I like that! Finally I don't have much money to invest so where would be the place to get the best deal...ebay? craigslist?

Suggestions?

Best advice: Look up a DEI dealer in your neighborhood - Viper, Python, Clifford. Tell them your needs. Ask them to install it. You won't regret it.

--Only very, very old alarms would keep sounding until the owner returns to the car (or the battery dies).

--All modern car alarms have a logic circuit that goes something like this:

When the car is violated, the siren sounds for 30 or 60 seconds.

If the violation stops (as in, the thief closes the car door), the alarm doesn't sound again.

If the violation continues (the thief left the door open), the alarm sounds for six 30-second or 60-sedond periods, then stops.

--As far as making intermitten sounds when someone gets too close, you're looking for something that goes under a variety of names: proxmity sensor, microwave sensor, and probably a few more.

They're not too expensive, but are tricky to adjust and prone to false alarms.

--If you're thinking of installing this yourself, read around this site some more. Also, some of the alarm manufacturers will let you read their installation manuals for free online......check those out first so you know what you're getting into.

Yea I'd probably want pretty much the proximity one being as how I'm not as worried about the car getting stolen as much as vandalism. A friend told me they run about $300. As for installation,I don't really install them so I may have to get that done.
