When I hook up the tach wire on my remote starter, the tranny shifts very hard and the check engine light comes on. Anyone encountered this problem, or know a fix?

Which tach wire did you use?  describe the location and color...may be wrong

the correct wire should be the white one at the coil on the passenger side of the engine.

I attached the tach wire from the remote starter to both of the white wires on the ignition module-the one from the ecu and the one going to the coil. Both wires caused the same problem. I'm starting to wonder if the Directstart unit is defective. BTW, i didn't attach both wires at the same time. :)

probably,  those wires are tested and true. BTW, don't connect at the same time. also it may have something to do with the way you adjusted the tach..... you should probably reset the unit and then re-learn tach. you'll have to reprogram the remote also.

Did you hook up the second ignition wire?

I hooked up each wire independently, and re-learned tach each time. The starter works just fine. It's the tranny that's the problem. It shifts very hard, and the check engine light comes on after driving the vehicle after it has been started remotely, and the key is inserted.

It sounds to me like you missed the white ignition wire that needs to see power during crank otherwise it will cause transmission shift problems and also turn on the check engine light but the vehicle will still remote start without it.
