Installing a stereo in a 88 grand prix?

I was just wondering if anyone knows if you can put stereo in where the factory is. Heres my problem... Where the factory stereo is you have the heater in a little rectangle to the left in the middle is the stereo, its just a little square...and on the right of the stereo is another square with the factory tape deck. Could you just cut through the dividers that seperate the stereo and the tape deck and itstall the stereo with a kit???? Just curious and i dont want to mess anything up so thats why i need help. So please help.             thanks
