I went to the local stereo store to price out a wiring plug and it was insane, they wanted $150 CAD!!! Apparently the installer guy says you need it or else you could run into issues with the air bags and interior lights? I think he is full of it and I would be fine doing it this way, I may lose some functions like the stereo will turn off when the key turns off, it won't wait until a door is open like the stock deck, etc... But I am okay with that I just want it to work properly and not affect the safety of the truck. Am I okay doing it without the harness?
Also what does Class 2 serial data mean?

you should choke it up and buy the plug, its a data retension harness (scoche DCGM09) ...bascially you could use the regular 03+ harness, but its said that in case of an accident the airbags may not deploy because the radio bounces back the data signal to the ECM ....that same harness is $121 here, you its right at the same price. If you came to my shop I would not do the install unless you had that harness

Hmmm well by the sounds of it should by the harness because it could be a safety issue. So why would the stereo have anything to do with the air bags?

because the  cars computer bounces data signals off of the radio along with other things in the car, and not having the factory radio in the car or the data retension harness it will cause that signal to not get bounced back to the computer
