I'm wondering if anyone has tried to tap into the compass on a '96 Dodge Ram or anything for that matter.

I can't believe I'm the first person to want to try this. :)
Anyone?

Just curious, why would you need to?

I was talking with my friend about gps systems and he wanted to know if he could tap the compass feed to use for some form of dead reckoning system. I'm not sure exactly how he's going to use it, but it involves custom software.

Dead reckoning has nothing to do with a compass. It needs the use of a speed sense(vss), reverse light, and the use of a gyro(I know this has something to do with a compass but is more complex). Tagging into a compass feed or something like the wire going to the display in the dodge would in no way help in installing any type of navigation system. A compass will tell you what way that you are going but cannot tell you where you are. Even if your friend was developing a new software for something I don't see how this would either help him, if anything it would probably hurt him because he would have to reverse engineer the system to tell how it sends it's signal. If you absolutely need to know the wire color then do a google search for "GENTEX", they are the company that makes the mirror or display you are looking into tying into.
