I have a Kenwood KVT-717 in my 2000 mustang.  It has always worked fine.  I recently changed the power wire going to my amp but changed nothing else.  After I did this, the head unit would turn on in standby, but shut down when i changed the source to anything.  It comes back on in standby a few seconds later but shuts off everytime it is changed to a source.  I reset it once and it worked just fine but didn't the next time i drove my car.  I tried resetting it again but it didn't help any other time.

That's pretty frustrating. I suggest you use the old power wire, so you won't encounter the same problem everytime you drive your car.
