ok first off im new to the forum a long time installer but never joined the group until now and i have to say you guys are quite helpful. ok to the point. i recently installed in my personal car a desktop pc with a tuner card with s vid out to go to my displays... fiberglass enclosed trackball mouse ect. ok heres my problem not really so much a problem but an issue. 90% of my business is word of mouth through repeat customers you know the deal one guy gets it then everyone else has to have it too. (apparently the pc in a car thing is a new concept around here) ok now ive got 10 guys with laptops wanting me to do the same.... no problem except im getting a horrible audio noise from the power inverter. all the comps are 19vdc at 3.4 amps anyone have either a schem. to convert to that or perhaps some ideas for quieting the inverters. all help appreciated.

Is the noise coming from the fan?

I believe he means that it is a noise coming through the speakers. if it was a noise from the unit, then I would suggest moving the inverter to the back of the car and making an enclosure for it.

I would suggest getting an AC noise filter. I have seen this problem and it usually ends in the inverter being the problem, which you can not fix. An AC filter will do the job for the one in your car, but I would suggest that you should tell your customers to buy a nice Inverter. THe nice ones have MSW, or Modified Sine-Wave, which is suppose to significantly decrease or completely eliminate the noise. Here's a thread that should give you some more info:

i really dont think its a problem with it being a cheaper inverter (because its not) it doesnt produce anyproblems with the laptop itself only the audio output into the hu if its not run to the head unit theres no problem at all i.e. through laptop speaker or headphones. so im thinking there could possibly be a ground loop mabey. not sure what to do honestly it would make much more sense if i could find it somewhere as opposed to going dc to ac back to dc to go from 12vdc to 19vdc dont know im going to keep experimenting with it thanks for replys

If you think it has to do with a ground loop, you can install a ground loop isolator inline between the PC and the radio. Audiovox sells one IST2 for less than $20.00. The other issue may be where you are hooked up to in the vehicle. I would suggest connecting the 12 volt + directly to the battery with an inline fuse close to the battery and ground the inverter to a paint free area of the vehicle chassis. Try this and if the noise goes away, install a relay inline in the positve feed to the inverter and activate the relay with an ignition circuit.

I do not know about newer laptops.  5 years ago I had never found a laptop that would not work under the following conditions.   you may need to do a little research before you try this on a newer laptop.

The only reason the laptop needs 19 volts input is to charge the laptop battery.  Remove the battery from the laptop and get a plug that plugs into it and run it on 12 volts.

hmmm now thats intresting........but would make sense the thing is only pulling a little over 3 amps to charge the bat..... thanks thats definately something to consider as to the previous power is grounded directly to the frame 12vdc + direct from the battery terminal with 8 gauge power and ground and a relay inline with the switch coming directly from the keyswitch on position i think i may have one of those inline filters in my shop ill have to adapt from 1/8th to rca but ill try that tomorrow and see if that helps any darned customers have me to busy to work on my own stuff. who knows mabey ill just end up abandoning the idea and going with one of those nifty carputers with the touchscreen display probably be a cleaner looking install anyway.......however doesnt all the periphrials and motherboard in a standard tower work off 12vdcbad noise from power inverter -- posted image.
