Heat Shrink Tubing Tips

If I'm splicing into (but not cutting) a wire and then soldering the two together and want to use heat shrink tubing for the insulation, do I just cut the tubing and wrap it around the solder joint?  Does anyone have tips on this technique?  And would I used tape to hold it in place?  Thanks for your help

If you are not breaking the wire in two, stick with Scotch 33 tape....

Or....if you have enough slack in the wire, bend it at the splice and slip the heat shrink over the doubled over wire; then shrink.

thanks guys, can I pick this tape up at Home Depot or Radio Shack?
