Alright after doing a 97 escort today I am about fed up with the mounting kit from metra. 99-5720. It it probably a 1 in 10 chance that the kit will snap and fit in there just fine. Even after I cut just about every thing out. I usually cut a little square for the relay in the bottom left too.
Any suggestions for the next one? Or should I just curse at metra.
Here is what I cut. Everything inside the dash is gutted to make room also.

Here is the manual of what to cut.

You do not need to remove ALL OF THAT material.....just a tad bit in the left hand side for the clip on the kit.

Even with all that gone though it seems to fit good. But it only works 10% of the time. I think the aftermarket clips are junk? Should i just try removing the left side area where the relay is at next time for a better fit?

ive only done a few of these but i had the same problem you are having more than once. how hard is it to make a special kit that only has to go into 2 different cars and you still cant design it to fit right.

The cutting is just to clear the knob.

I personally like the bestkits one sold by bestbuy.

They are so flimsy that they require 4 screws from the front to hold them in,

but what do you exspect for cheap junk.

I always though  it was for the relay to clear for the Rear Defrost 99 5720 fitment -- posted image.  I guess I should have looked closer.
