An experience this week leads me to ask if there is an item to make to protect the cars electrics from spikes or surges coming from a cars alternator, of mid 80's Subaru.
my other car is a SUBARU too!

I was going to be facetious and say yes it's the rectifier inside the alternator, never come across this one, any ideas?  Because of its self capacitative effect, battery output is quite smooth and a failed alternator is more likely to cause the problem. Alternators on some cars are fuse protected, funnily enough on many Japanese cars.

Driving along at about 4000rpm no load, 120kph, went to turn off highway braking gently at same time, suddenly due to complex wiring of this vintage my wipers began to work at either speeds, dash lights lit up, engine ran very rough then not well under load. Braking, wipers and kickdown activates rear wheels into 4WD on normally FWD car. I found main fuse ,fusible link broken or corroded not burnt. On both brake light bulbs the stand holding filament in place melted to a blob. One had melted to bridge the tail light cct. Interior light filament dropped off both contacts, park light bulb blown, indicator/hazard switch malfunctioning, related fuses in panel now shorting with everything disconnected. Engine did run after replace FL but died now no ignition module signal. I used the engine, interior light, indicators and hazards. Considered the bad contact of FL caused alternator to supply too great a current surging through normally protective fuse panel
my other car is a SUBARU too!
