voltage regulator + diode

I made this diagram to connect either my car battery or cigarette lighter line to a voltage regulator. I need help to make sure I wire correctly.

Why do you have a resistor before the diode?  Why do you have the diode? 

Most voltage regulators call for at least one cap (some require two).  If you are going to go with "optional" components, I would go with these caps before the diode and resistor.

Other then that, it looks good.  Just make sure you put the striped side of the diode towards the voltage regulator if you use the diode.
