Ya that's right, you read it correctly.
Did you ever hear someone that is asking all about bandpass boxes, getting the info about how much less performance they will get, then refusing to acknowledge that they would be better off just running in sealed or vented configuration. But they refuse. Weird.
Okay so here is the story, I am helping a friend of a friend of a friend install his recently "acquired" "used" gear. Now this guy was very concerned with hiding nearly every component somewhere in the car, to the point that other aspects of the system would even suffer due to it. I actually sort of get this whole idea as I have never been one for all the flashy, "look what I have" installs, but this dude was taking it to a whole different level. Then when it came time to start thinking about enclosure design for his subs it got really weird. After going over the numbers a few times it was very obvious a simple vented box (was gonna design a really nice setup with a port blowing through the rear armrest access hatch) would have been the cheapest to build, take up the least space, and out perform any bandpass design we could come up with, still not a chance of getting through to this guy.
Why would anyone(less an audio engineer for research purpose)want to take any other route? Well because he stole all of his gear from someone he knows!!!! And this was his attempt to "hide" all of it. AND I was assisting him with all of this!!!! wth!!!!
I'm not gonna get into all the specifics cause the police are actually still building their case against him right now and I don't want to put that in jeopardy. Lets just say this dude was a VERY DUMB criminal and I am very anxious to tell ya'll how this all went down, as it is actually kind of humorous. Just gonna have to wait a month or two...but I promise to tell the whole story to anyone who is interested in a 'stupid thief story'.
So next time you have someone asking all about trying make a bandpass work for no real apparent reason other than to be different(what he kept saying)...well you get the idea. Not sure if I am just really gullible or sheltered, but this was the last reason I would have came up with for him being so unreasonable concerning the enclosure he was "set-on". I don't think anyone will be able to pull this off on me again.
(Mods,I hope this is in the right section, I will move it if need be)
