door speakers

Does anyone have any thoughts on the use of a 4" mid(separate/component) or a 4X6 plate coax in a factory replacement location in a door?

Also, any suggestions for make/model of a speaker?

If you want to keep it original, then go for the replacement sized speakers. If not, I would suggest modifying the stock location to house a larger speaker . 4 " won't give you very good sound by itself, but if you couple it with a 6 1/2 " them it will be very good. I would go for the 4" component set over the 4 x 6 if those were my only two choices for the reason that the tweeter can be angled for better imaging.

The original speaker size was 4x8, not 4 or 4x6 or something standard.  I can't find anything that measures 4x8, but I know I can use 4x6, or 2 4" speakers side by side.  I only have a bit over 4 inches of clearance top to bottom of the mount, but I have just over 8 inches of clearance front to back.

Tweeters were certainly never used back in 68, but I might be able to find a place in the door for one.  I will not surface mount a tweeter anywhere, but flush mounting is an option.

Let's say I can't find a place to use a tweeter.  I already have a pair of quality mid-high custom speakers in the dash, so do you think a 4x6 plate with separates, or just the 4" mid from a component?

I have yet to cut the holes, so if a 4x6 is what you suggest, that's no problem...I will cut the hole just right.  Now, after that's done, does the damping go against the inner side of the outermost piece of sheet metal of the door?  where else does it go?
