Neither. Alpine is it's own company. HK is a division of by Harman International, parent company of JBL, HK, Infinity, DBX, Crown, Lexicon, and a few others.
<soapbox>To a lot of folks in the industry, Harman is a Borg company. It gobbles up god brands and dilutes them, much like they have for Crown over the last 2 years. Infinity is one of their shining stars, but it's a shadow of the competitors, like Adire, Focal, MB, RE, etc.</soapbox>

I didnt think that they had a business relationship, but the BMW dealer just told my g/f that its not worth getting the HK upgrade, as the cheaper stereo is made by Alpine and sounds just as good.  He also said that one of these companies owned the other (this is why I dont trust car dealers worth a damn).  Now, I was very sceptical about all this info, so I thought I would ask here.

Thanks,

harmon has had some issues the last couple of years (I think some corporate restructuring is about to take place) they should be getting much better, but keep in mind their priority has been and probably always will be home audio

Actually, Harman's main focus is in the OEM business.  Their information processing now comes in not only Mercedes, but BMW and Lexus.  Their idea of 'Harman infotainment' will become more popular as the electronics of new cars get more evolved.  The OEM division is almost bigger than all of the sub-companies i.e...Mark Levinson, Lexicon,DBX, JBL, Infinity, added together.
