2004 tacoma trailer wiring

I know this isn't much help, but the toyota brand one is plug and play and only 24$, no wires to strip or anything.

i do have the toyota brand, but since my tacoma was not ready for the towing package, wires have to be spliced.  Dealer is not mych help, but just tells me to pay for them to put it in.  Anybody have any clue?2005 Toyota Corolla S

Thats strange. I work for toyota, and the correct harness is a 15 minute install. You unplug the taillights, plug the new harness in each and plug the existing taillight harness into it, route the output wire to the bumper. Installed. I would imagine the one you got is an aftermarket that that particular dealer gets a 'good deal' on and sells as OEM. We have a few parts ourselves that are like that. Otherwise, you got me.

when you take your taillights out (four screws each) there is a harness plugged into them for all the lights, unplug that on both lights. Take the trailer harness and insert the trailer end pigtail and the passenger side light end down through the opening in the driver side taillight opening, pulling them out through the bottom through the 2" access hole. Stop when the converter box is flush at the top of the driver side taillight opening. zip tie the converter box to the steel barrier there, there is a slot on the inboard side to slide the 14" zip tie through, and a hole in the converter box for the tie to go through. Take the left side trailer harness plug (labelled at converter box) and plug the truck lamp harness into it. the other end of the T in the harness goes into the tail lamp. Do the same for the passenger side. ROute the output pigtail along the factory wiring to the middle of the truck, and out the back. There is a white wire with an eyelet on it sticking out of the output end of the harness, about halfway down. You need to bolt that to the chassis. On two doors (if memory serves) there is threaded hole between the spare tire and new hitch location, and the four door has a non-threaded hole off to the driver side of the spare tire, right along the factory harness routing. Newer two doors will have that hole too, and it is much easier to use. Done deal :)

Ok, found what the problem was, the harness was for a tundra not a tacoma, I guess I should read the box befrore attempting to install, took it back to the dealer and was very plesent untill he told me that I had to buy a $153 unit for that.  Since you work for toyota does that sound about the right price range for a wiring harness?  And I found the plugs that you were talking about, just need the right harness now. Please reply ASAP, do not want to spend $153 unless I absolutely have to. 2005 Toyota Corolla S

153 is pretty high. That -is- the right price range according to a quick look online, but its way marked up. The last one i did had $24.00 on the SOP ticket.   SOP's usually go for 20-50% markup, depending on value of the part. If you have a buddy that works in the industry, have them call an see if he can get a better business to business price on it. If not, 150$ isn't all that bad for what you're getting. ..we have these light kits for scions that we get 180$ a piece for, i found them online at another toyota dealer for 40$ the other day... each dealer is different on certain parts, if you have multiple dealers in your area, try calling around. good luck
