2004 VW Toureg Situation?

Has anyone worked on one of these yet? The one I had did have the navigation. I was installing a cell phone in it, when after removing some panneling on the drvers side the guys up front decided to back out of the install. I was pretty uncomfortable with it also being a $45,000+ suv... Does anyone else feel like this was a good idea of backing out instead of going forward and possibly damaging interior panneling... I'm not saing i'm not careful I was its just that certain pannels like the one under the passangers feet were being resistive. I know some installers out there only do higher end vehicles... How do you deal with these situations?

VW panelling is very different than other companies. If your not familiar with the way VW puts together their cars internally, then I would say that you did the right thing. I found out the hard way with some VW's that the panels not only snap together , but they also need to be pushed or pulled up in order to release them from the spot they are in. Just do your research for these vehicles and if you have friends in dealerships like this, ask for blow out diagrams of how to remove panels and such inside the vehicle.

There is nothing wrong with backing out of a job if you don't feel comfortable working on the car.

Ya man, VW's can be a real pain. Velocity is right on with saying you have to know how to pull them apart. The first time I did a FM Mod in a Tourag it took like 3 bloody hours because disassembly was a nightmare. I dont blame you for backing out, I almost did, but my boss is a real vw guy and was able to figure it out after I swore at it for like an hour. Have you ever tried to pull the sill plates off on a late 80's BMW thats never had them removed, thats a barrel of monkeys because then you are dealing with stubborn clips AND brittle plastic

To which I would always add that I will not cover broken panels on this vehicle due to it's age, the brittle plastic, rusted clips underneath etc. Older GM pickups for example, the rear bezel above the window for example......

Oh Rob, dude, I can tell your a canadian. I see those trucks so often its rediculous. And those damn clips holding those panels ALWAYS break. If I have to do rear speakers I charge an extra 40 bucks and I tell the customers strait up that its to cover repairing all the broken sh*t that comes with that job.

Great!! I just didn't wanna make it seem like I was a hack for backing out... I thought I was doing the right thing for backing out. When the lady came to pick it up she was a lil' upset that she left her vehicle for an hour and nothing was done to it... I pulled SOME panneling off but when it came to side curtain air bags I got a bit more nervous... and pretty much stopped before I attempted those... She said the VW dealer wouldn't even touch the thing... well goes to show you something about the vehicle if the dealer won't even install a cell phone in it... I know dealers don't usually do that kind of thing...  BTW... she owns a "few" burger kings... grrrrrrr

I never done a VW but now after reading all this I DO NOW, I like getting into things that other say are a pain to do. Plus get the experince for it.

Just wait until you have to run a power wire to the battery!  The battery is under the driver seat and to remove the seat requires a special VW Toureg only tool unavailable thru Snap-on.  Even the VW dealership in my area did not have one, but we did find a shop in the area we were able to borrow one from. 

 In short - charge an arm, leg, & left nut for anything to be done to this car.  The owner can usually afford it and for the PITA its gonna be, you might as well make it worth your while.  If the customer thinks its too much $$$ let them walk - its always better to seem "expensive" than "unqualified". Never, ever-ever discount labor, especially for over-engineered german cars!  This is a $40k+ SUV, an oil change on this car runs over $120 and nothing is going to be "quick and easy".  Any dealer work done to this car is going to be pricey - paving the way for aftermarket retailers.  Charge accordingly gentlemen!  These cars are not fun...

Amen to that... I rember I first one I did... I swear it was screwed on... While pulling it off I looked like I was doing a power lift... Then when it did come off I more or less sh** my self when I thought I broke it. Fun stuff I tell yea. I have a 01' TDI I love to drive it. But I'm scared to work on it.

You did the right thing...
