Mustang 79 - 93 Box Design

I have been working hard on a box designed to fit the hatchback of my 1986 Mustang.

I had 3 goals in mind:

1) Fit the amp(s) and speakers into the space and make it look like it belonged there, not just a box in a hatch.

2) be able to carry some cargo (ie: tools, jumper cables, second battery)

3) Have acces to the spare

I have completed the design phase. I was going to build it, but at this point I may not be able to do to the amount of disrepair that the car is in making it non-drivable ever!

So I am offering my plans to anyone needing to place a box in the hatch of a "older" mustang.

If you need more information on the design, let me know. Also the design shows only one half of the total build. I did it like this to show the "floating" detail of the amp rack and the mid range speakers.

None of those links work at all.

1) Get AAA if you dont have it already( because you will need it if you get a flat)

2) Take out the spare tire, strip hatch area.

3) Use basic fiberglassing techniques to build a tub enclosure, wood walls, foberglass bottom, fiberglass top, keep it nice and flat. And maybe even do a window/ board over the subs( kinda like bandpass), so you can throw things on top of the box it can be kept completely hidden if you have enough experience.

 I had a 88'  Trunk style Stang' and I thru 3-12"s in there, with a nice amp rack, and kept it no higher than 6" from original trunk floor height, because the air volume from the spare tire indention wich was1.5- 2cf last I checked. I started off making a frame around the spare tire with 4"x28 and 32" length strips of MDF. stapled  fiberglass to the bottom( of course the trunk was lined with drop cloth( wich is plastic sheeting so the fiberglass doesnt stick to the trunk) and the top baffle was just fleece layered with fiberglass . Thats just an idea. If your good at building boxes, thats a good starting intro to fiberglassing, and you can make it look pretty awsome, and really get looks. And good luck to the guys trying to steal your system, if they ever get that far.
