the xterra has no HU, so I need a remote lead.  can I use the ignition BLACK/ white wire?  it's at +12V only when the ignition is in the ON position.   there should not be a large current, so do you think the 12V will hurt the amp?

yes, you can use this wire to turn on the amp. This will not damage the amplifier at all.
