Motorized Amp Rack

I want to implement a motorized amp rack that slides under my subs, but I haven't figured out the best way to implement the motorized part... So far the best solution I have come up with is a system similar to rack and pinion.  I figured I could attach a gear to a motor, and find a rack that would be placed on the rack... I hope you understand this...  My problem is where to find the materials?  I looked at radio shack but they didn't have ANY gears and I don't think the motors they had had anywhere near enough torque to move a heavy amp rack... I'm thinking maybe a cordless drill motor might work, but I don't know...  Does anyone else have an idea on where I can get these materials?  I think if the install goes through it will be very nice...

What you are looking for is a 12 volt linear actuator.

have you considered using a power window setup? some of them are quite torquey and may be easy to find and reasonably priced, especially in comparison to purchasing a linear actuator...

just a thought...

What is a linear actuator... never heard of it... ;).  The window motor sounds promising though... may have to give it a shot

a linear actuator is an actuator that is capable of moving great weights variable distances...but they are kinda pricey...last ones I priced were ranging in price from $250 CDN to $450 CDN...they come in all kinds of throw lengths and weight load capabilities...have seen them capable of over 18 inches and 450 lbs...

but price does rule them out for a lot of people, myself included...I dont need the amp rack to pick my car up off the ground, so I am just going to use a power window setup for my own purposes...not an amp rack but a large hinged panel that conceals my Epicenter and changer and remote gains and such...power window setups are capable of moving a few pounds, so it might be ideal for you unless you are planning on an amprack to hold 64 amps...nice thing is they are easy to run off your alarm remote too, just buy the window modules and its all run off of your key fob...

I'm wanting to move two Pioneer GM-X962 Amps, a Cap, and some wiring/dist blocks... You think i could get the window system to work for this, or would I need to find something else... oh, the actual box will be made of plywood and plexi most likely.

Thanks for the advice about the power windows... I have a friend of the family working on it, he owns an autobody shop and he should be able to find me what I need.  Thanks to everyone that helped.
