I have a very loud alternator whine/noise in my set up.  Obviesly it is very frustrating.  The specs are as follows:

  • 4ga power wire running to a capacitor in a trunk (approx 11 feet)
  • 4ga power from capacitor to distribution block (approx 4 inches in length)
  • 2 x 8 gauge from the distribution block to 2 Amps (approx 20 inches)
  • 1 x 16ga from distribution block to EQS by AudioControl
  • Capacitor grounded with 4ga approx length 8 inches
  • 2 x amp ground 8ga approx. length 20 inches for both
  • EQS ground 16ga approx. lenght 20 inches.

All grounds are attached to the same point on the chasis.  I drilled a hole in the trunk floor(spare wheel well), sanded off the paint approx. 1inch diameter.  Power wires are run on one side and signal wires are run on the opposite sdide of the car.  The only place where these get closer together is in the trunk where the whole system meets.  I also put on good connectors, and a good size bolt to ground it.  If I set up the EQS as it is recommended in the manual I simply can NOT have the system running the noise is so loud that I am affraid of blowing my speakers.  Any ideas suggestions to try?  Other guys with the same car have no problem what so ever with grounding in the trunk(same area as my ground), the only difference is that they don't have the EQS.  On the EQS the factory setting for

Input Grounding: Balanced, the only other option is Un-balanced.  If I change this will it help???

Ground Isolation Selector: Default is Ground(I am asuming that), then there is option for Isolated, and 200Ohms.  ANy ideas what these would do if I change these??? Would these help???

I installed few systems in my life and never had alternator noise because I follow all the rules...unitl now.  Please help.

Try grounding the shield of the rca's to chassis. Start at the head unit, there might be a ground loop between it and the audio control piece.

I like the Audio control stuff but there can be noise issues with those.

Keep me posted, if no luck I will tell you what to do next.

And yes, you can try switching the balanced and ground isolate in the EQ, that might have the same effect as what I suggested.

Unplug the EQS and bypass it totally. Retest to see if you have noise, post the results.

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

Thank you all for all the helps, and suggestions.

Here is what I have done to the factory system so that you guys can see the sequence:

  • Decided to ugrade my audio system the factory was not cutting it.
  • Got 3 way Focals for front, 2 way for back, and two 11" Focal subs.
  • Got Clarion Mono DPX1800 and APX4360 to run al of that
  • Got AUdioControl 6LCi for intergration to factory 6CD changer
  • Got a 2.5 farad cap.
  • Got EQS to fix up the signal from the factory unit.

Many, many days later all is connected and car is assemble back again.  Turn everything on ALTERNATOR NOISE central.  After tweaking with it for a while I was able to get the alternator noise lower but still there.  Another thing that I noticed is that the factory radio has some sort of a EQ build it that changes the frequencies as you increase your volume, that was throwing off the setting I had on the EQS.

  • Installed Clarion MAX675VD HU.
  • that allowed me to get rid of the AudioControl 6LCi
  • Still keeping the EQS for fine tuning
  • Still alternator noise, and now when I turn on my head light I get buzzing noise (induced noise)

Played around with the gains and settings, nothing would work.  Changed the settings inside the EQS no difference what so ever.  I tried all the setting and combinations inside the EQS, and then on top of that I even tried all the setting while grounding it directly to battery, and grounding it separate form the amp and so on.  Absolutely no effect what so ever.  The induced noise and alternator noise was still there.  I even run a separete RCA wires on top of my seats just to see if it is the RCA but no luck.  I did not try the recommended trick of grounding the RCA wires, wasn't aware that it might help, thank you for the suggestion.

Next as suggested I decided to take out the EQS and run the HU directly to the amps..........guess what ABSOLUTELY clean and clear signal, is sounds soooo good even without any signal processing.  THE HU has only 3EQ High/Mid/Bass.

My conclusion, not to diss AudioControl, but the 2 unit that I used were terrible, no wonder I though these were a good price compared to others out there.  I can not believe that they are allowed to sell this crap.

I wish though that I could have more processing power, what would you guys recommend for signal processing?  Please don't say AudioControl.

Thankyou for all the help.

Yep, what I figured, been there, I was an Audiocontrol dealer for years. The grounding of the rca shield might have worked but you have to find where the ground loop is, so like I stated start at the head unit and go from there.

But if you are happy without the eq thats definatly an easy way out.

Take care.
