i need to reduce 12v to 5v in my car. can i do this via a resistor, like done with an LED? or do i need to do something more complex? simple is better.

How much current does the meter require?

the meter requires 5v to power up and will read up to 30amps.

Grab a 7805 5vdc voltage regulator from Radioshack.

There is an input pin (usually 7-30vdc), a ground, and a 5vdc output.

3 pins, and thats it!

ok, from all the diagram i've been looking at that regulator is usually accompanied by 2 small capacitors on a small pc board, so i didnt know if i could use it on its own or if i have to assemble a small circuit?

The caps will help with the regulation, but if you have a constant input voltage (such as a car battery) and your output isn't constantly changing you should be able to get by without them.
