it is what tells the car/alarm that the door is open. No you don't need it for a keyless entry

If this is your first install then make sure your using a good Multimeter.  Auex is right for stating that you dont need it for a keyless entry.  A keyless entry only may need lock, unlock, parking lights, power and ground.  Some cases it also needs factory alarm disarm if you have one.  Very simple connections on a regular vehicle.

You'll only need to worry about the door trigger if it is on a security system. Beyond that, you shouldn't need to worry about it, but there are some models and vehicles where it is recommended you access it to prevent damage to the locks and the actuators.
(Acura and Honda is where you will need this the most. If you try to lock the car with the doors open, you could damage the motor's gears because they have a mechanism that prevents the door from locking with the door open.
