I just spent 8 hours installing this but it still is not functional (install not complete)  I am having trouble understanding where the wires go. I have a 1998 Ford E-150 with a 4.6L 6 cyl engine. All the mechanical connections are correct, but now I just need a little electronic help.

Am I supposed to hook up both leads from the VSS wire to both leads in my vehicle?

Where do I hook up the Tach wire?

Should I just use the Magnet on the drive shaft and if I do, where does the Tach wire go?

Thanks

Your vehicles has a speed sensor - the magnet kit is for old cars like mine that are pre-VSS days.

The tach wire (blue) from the cruise harness should branch into the tach wire of your car.

Same with the VSS.

I have this done on my Mustang GT 4.6L and it works perfectly.

make sure your programming switches are set correctly.

but I don't know where the tach wire is in my vehicle. How do I find it?

I know where the VSS is. It has two leads going to the VSS. Do I need to plug the twin lead wire from the cruise to both the wires to the VSS in the vehicle?

You will most likely have to trace the tach wire back to the PCM or very carefully cut into the wiring harness.

I can use the splicing parts that were supplied.

I have found that my vehicle does not have an ignition coil it is electronic ignition and uses ignition packs. Do you think that I could use the crankshaft position sensor instead?

According to a Rostra tech manual I have, this is for the 1997 model Econoline, but it most likely carried on to 98, here is the info I have:

the GREY wire from the cruise control (VSS) goes to the grey/black wire (pin58) of the 104 pin connector on the PCM

Your BLUE tach wire from the cruise control goes to pin 48 of the same connector, and that wire color is WHITE/ pink.

If you find your pCM, you can carefully open the looming to get to the wire bundle. Carefully, find those wire and splice into them - carefully.

I would not touch any of the sensors.

According to the Rostra guide, the pcm is located at position 13, - driver's side engine bulkhead.

If you are still unsure, ask a local mecahnic with Mitchell on demand or Alldata for a pinout of the PCM.

Its much easier to splice into 2 wires than to fool with magnets.

Good luck

The tach input to the cruise is not nesessary if the vehicle is an automatic. It is primarily designed for manual transmission vehicles. I never use the tach input.
