newbie:- making templates

I am new to fabrication and wondered what most prople use for making templates. I have seen in a book a foam profile gauge, you can use this to take on a shape and then transfer this to your template( ie. for making an mdf panel to carry an amp on the side of a shaped boot). What do you guys use to make your templates and does anybody have any recommendations for essential tools that I may need. Thanks Nick

most of the time just I just get the general shape with cardboard or posterboard then transfer that to the MDF. after a while you will have a ton of different curves, circles, and different shapes. a router table is your best friend. what tools do you have, and what kind of fabricating are you looking to get more involved in?

I have a router and router table and access to a table saw so I think the right tools are at my disposal. Does anybody use a profile gauge?? I cant seem to locate one Naughty

Harbor Freight and Sears both carry them in the US. I would guess similar shops in the UK would have them. They're called contour gauges if we're thinking of the same thing.
