most tyre well fg works i've seen on this and other forums usually involves laying mats and resin. Wouldn't it be easier to use fleece and lay over the well, pour resin in, and then spread it out? Just an idea that hit me, not that I'm contemplating doing it!

In my opinon they will be the same..Some people use fleece for all FG work such as myself..Others use fiberglass mats

Yeah I think you would have to still strengthen the fleece though with something more than just a layer of fleece.   Also how would you get the fleece to conform to the curves of the spare tire well, it would be way harder than laying down the mat.
Learning the trade one fiberglass creation at a time!

Are you suggesting laying the fleece then pulling it out to do the glassing?
It'd be a lot easier to just mask the area, put a release agent on it and then start glassing. You'd save the drying time of the fleece.
