i was reading an article in my DEC 04' issue of 'car audio and electronics' and it shows a guy shaping a steering wheel out of urethane foam, then it was sanded and afterwards fiberglassed with about 4 or 5 layers.....   i think they did the dash outta foam also...  has anyone ever done a project with this stuff? and if so, is it easy? and where do i buy it??? i wanna do some stuff for my iroc-z and looks easy to shape.... Urethane Foam shaped and fg’d ? -- posted image.

alright man I got the info,  I called us composites and talked to a guy.  The stuff from lowes will not work its a polystyrene which is styrofoam basically.   So I asked him if I could use the two part mixing foam, that expands and he said yes.   So he said that to get a flat sheet of the foam take a cardboard box of the desired width and length you want the foam to be.   Then put some thick plastic in the box, and then mix the foam pour it in let it harden and then pull the foam out and pull the plastic sheeting off the foam and voila you have a scultable piece of foam he said the best for strength and sculptability would be the 4lb density.  If youre going to make like a dashboard or something that wouldnt need to be that strong I would just use a 2lb density.  Here is a link to what I'm talking about,  http://www.shopmaninc.com/foam.html

Heres another website to show you a little bit more on how to do it,  http://foxxaero.homestead.com/Radar1.html

Yes I copy and pasted this directly from the website link I just gave you

"Once fully cured this foam can be laminated over with any type of polyester, epoxy or vinyl ester resin without melting."

Yeah I was really getting frustrated looking for those sheets but now this way is a lot cheaper then having those things shipped in so I'm extremely happy.
