Thinning Resin?

can you just mix a little acetone with the resin to thin it? i was watching overhaulin' and the resin they were using on the dash was much thinner than the stuff i use, is that how they thin it down? i seem to remember a post abotu this but i could not find it. anyone know what im talking about? obviously i dont.
