Cardboard fiberglass core?

I am going to build a heavy-duty MDF/fiberglass console for my Bronco, and have considered using cardboard covered in fiberglass for some of the straight parts instead of heavy, dense MDF. I made a small box out of double-ply corrugated cardboard and then covered it inside and out with 1 layer of 6 oz fiberglass cloth. (Note: I spent about 15 minutes on the whole thing without much planning, but it was just a test anyway). I stood on the "lid" of the box to test its strength and to my surprise it actually held up. I used a ton of resin on the box so that the corrugation in the cardboard would soak it up and make the whole thing stronger. I believe this could be a good alternative to using MDF, but before I start the actual project I would like to know if anybody has any experience with using cardboard as a core for the fiberglass?

yea, you can use anything that will hold the first layer, after that, just build it up, i've used old rags, popcicle sticks, cardboard, tape, you name it, Bad Boys Customs

i once used a rolled-up poster to make pods for 4" speakers, moulded onto a kick panel, and they're still ok.

Well since we are talking center console. I have my stuff stripped out and am starting to look at the redoing of it all. I'm entirely scrapping the old console and I'm gonna redo it. This also means new shift knob(automatics have little options) and a boot since I really don't care to know exactly which gear it is in. (I know it well enough that it goes P, R, N, OD, D, 2, 1) and maybe later I'll design something to let me know. I just really don't wanna mess with that really, laziness. ;) I just need to know really how to even create this mold. Its going to be quite rounded out and everything, so I doubt I'll really even use any wood material. Chicken wire from what I've heard is probably gonna work with me best, but I really have no clue where the hell to get that. (Even in this farming town from hell.) Any ideas? Also should I make a mold of the base surface first as well? I'm thinking if I do that, I can possibly find a way to wire/fleece into what I want. Starting from no base might be a lot harder. we had another thread were we were talking about using florist foam, the polystyriene or whatever it's called, that would work well for th at woudln't it?  i would ether do that,,, or do the bottom mold like you said up there and do a few layers to have a base to build up on, that would work good i think, then you could just stick some components (like a square mdf "ring" for the shifter and boot to go threw) up there will doll rods holding them up or something..... chicken wire you can get at any hardware store, you could probably also use any kind of screen or something else that you can bend like that...
