New to the forum, and was hoping to get some insite into this idea. I have a box being built for a 99 Taurus Station wagon.. it's for a single 12 inch MTX. The box is 2 cubic feet internal volume with about a 15 inch deep shelf port.... now the question I have.. is can I separate that one shelf port into two. The opening measures 2 inches by 14 inches.. so what if I made two 2 inch by 7 inch? Possibly too small an opening.. is there a calculation for possible port whisper? Any info and suggestions would be appriciated.

What are you trying to acomplish by having two ports instead of one?

sorry bout that guys.. I thought it would copy paste over.. ok.. well I'm just trying to create a symetrical look with the box front. I could just make a fake port or something, but I just figured I'd ask to see if anyone knew if splitting it would cause negative effects.

If you change one port to two ports the sizes will change. It's not a matter of volume, as in you can't figure the volume of your port and cut it in half for two ports. If you change your present port to make two and kept all else the same including port opening area, you would have to increase the length of BOTH ports by over double the length of the original one. And if you decrease the opening area of the port, the length will grow. Here are some calculating tools for you to use:

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Post up how things turn out. You sound as if you would be a good candidate to take the step to a box-building program. I have a stickied topic in the Car Audio forum on using WinISD that would clear things up a lot for you...and take care of some of those calculations, too. Of course you have to follow along and download the program. It's not that hard.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Above, I said, "And if you decrease the opening area of the port, the length will grow." That's not right...it's the opposite. See why I need to use a box modeling program? I get confused. ;)
