Ok so i was trying to customize my rear panel in my 94 mark viii to house a alpine type r 6x8 and a tweeter since the ones in the car previously were ugly. This is my first fiberglass attempt and was the only one of my friends with enuff guts 2 give it a shot. I did my research an had the general idea but the only fiberglass i could find were a few packages of matting not very big at all an i ran out so i used the fiberglass tape that drywallers use. Its drying in my driveway right now, but the tape doesnt saturate as well as the matting and its also a lot more spread out. My thoughts were if it hardens alright i could continue with it or order more matting online an just put it over the taping to strengthen it and keep going. Any thoughts? Did i screw up by using the taping what will the effect be? Just a 17 yearold trying to get started thanks for the help.

are you talking about the drywall tape you use to join two pieces of drywall (tape then mud)? if so that wasn't a good choice. you say it didn't soak up well if you can rip that sh** off and get some matt. but it is hard you might just do some sanding air sander would make it easyer. can you give us a few pictures to see what it looks like. if you can't get any in your area let me know next time i have three giant rolls of it in my garage they are like 40lbs each i have plenty

You could always try to buy what you need online.

pmh, yes thats wut i used over a layer of regular matting only because i ran out tho, i checked it this morning it dried alright, but its not as solid and transparent as the matting. It actually helped shape certain spots. ill take sum pictures later if i can but my thoughts for now is go find more matting and saturate the hell out of wuts already there an put another layer of matting on top of it. Its not that bad cuz im just building on top of the paneling i already had, its not a completely new mold. As for your matting where do u live and how much would u charge me if ur close by possibly itd b better then ordering

by the way, im building directly to the original paneling, it stuck nicely is this a good idea? i figured this would be quicker since its a HUGE panel goes to the bak of my drivers seat to the end of the backglass. I figured this way everything will already be on it to reattached. Just hope i dont get pulled over netime soon cuz i broke my seatbelt trying to get it out of the panelling lol. Im gonna take your advice and try sanding a little bit of w/e isnt stuck in the resin and then matting over it.

I would talk to pmh61 and see about getting fiberglass material.  He/she may give it to you and all you pay is shipping, I don't know what terms he/she will do it under.  Nonetheless, I would take em up on the offer.

I have not tried using the drywall tape before, but who knows, maybe it gives an advantage in one area.  Be sure to have some body filler handy too, to finish out your project.  It also never hurts to have a few gallons of resin chillin' in the corner for when you make a bad batch or simply need more.

If you are going to search the net, I have made a small list of sites that are good to check for supplies, etc.  See which has the lowest price.

Supplies:

www.fibreglast.com
www.shopmaninc.com
www.selectproducts.com
www.fiberlay.com
www.partsexpress.com

Inspiration/knowledge:

www.hzemall.com
www.caraudiohelp.com

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
When you do not know what you are doing and what you are doing is the best -- that is inspiration.

Hey guys, well once it was dried the dry wall tape wasnt too bad, kinda just gave suttin to work off of i used it instead of fleece over the ring mounts probably took twice as long as fleece wouldve but worked none the less. My paneling is huge, so i ran out of filler while working on it, im buyin some more tomorro and its coming out really good. ill post pics soon,

I know how you feel, i'm 16 and i just jumped into my first fiberglass project in my car.  I had worked with fiberglass before, but it never had to be near as perfect as would a sub box or center console in a car.  Theres definatly a big learning curve.

As for where to buy, if you're anything like me you hate waiting on ordered items and paying shipping.  You can buy fiberglass material at walmart, but its way overpriced and you cant buy large ammounts.  Places like autozone are a little better, but are still overpriced.  Go to www.westmarine.com  and look if theres a store in your area.  They sell fiberglass mat in larger quantities than walmart and carry gallon sized containers of resin.  Remember when you're buying to buy in bulk.  You'll save money in the long run.  Especially with body filler and resin.
