I have a 2003 S-10 and wanted to get started fiberglassing the interior door panels this weekend. I have done several FG parts before so i have a general understanding of how to get it to adhere to plastic, but the arm rest on the door is made out of vinal and is squishy.
I don't think I can FG right over that b/c it seems to me it wouldn't adhere properly and would just flex thus cracking the FG, I have read other forms where people say just rip the vinal cover off then start your work. But in this case from what I have noticed from the arm rest if you take off the vinal covering your not going to have much of an arm rest left. Any help with this would be great. Like I said I'm starting this weekend, so the sooner the better.
Thanks, David

You're going to have to strip everyting off the panel. Build up the armrest like you want it then glass it. If you want it padded, you'll have to make one and mount it to the top of the panel afterwards.

well, on the panel it's self I have a pretty good idea what I want. And I know how to get it to adhere to the plastic. It's just the arm rest it's self. I know I want to glass it. But your saying that I have to take all the vinal padding off the arm rest and start building it up with FG filler? then smoothing it out later with body filler so on and so forth? Or are you talking about doing it a different method?

You could actually do the build up with some closed cell foam and then glass over that, but yes, glass will eventually pull away from vinyl, and you would also have problems with cracking if you don't strip it. Check out www.fiberglassforums.com and do a search... there are tons of pics of door pannel builds...
