First time working this the setup. I am wondering if it is necessary to use the mute wire and aux input. From the looks of the diagram the device just interrupts the speaker output. I am wondering if this is correct? If so, does this also mean that the parrot device has its own amp for the output to the speakers for calls?

you are correct on the mute wire. Do not use the thin speaker output wires. They are preamp wires only. You need to cut 2 wires on the female black plug for sound.
