I have an '89 mustang, and I'm wondering if I can tap into the light in my ash tray for two led pods from streetglow. I want to put the pods under my dash. Would that be the right amount of voltage? I was thinking of tapping into this light because it comes on only when I turn my headlights on. If I can, do I hook up the negative wire from the lights to the negative wire on for ash tray light, or do I ground it into the metal. Also, what kind of wire should I use? Thanks a lot!

Do the LED pods run on 12 volts? or 5 volts?

Well I think that it will be the right amount of voltage.  The ash tray light should be able to supply adequate current for the LEDs.  If the ashtray lights dim with the dash lights, you will have to try it to see how it reacts to the dimming.

The best way would be to solder and heat shrink the connection.  Some 18 Ga. primary wire available from an auto parts store should work for you.
