Hi everybody....I hope this is the right place for this
I am wanting to add some back up lights to my truck....I found out the other day that it really sucks trying to backup a trailer up while dark and raining!!I don't want to have them come on with the backup lights all the time, only with a switch that I will install for them. This was how I was thinking of wiring them up.....12v from battery or 12v source....inline fuse.....on/off switch with indication light.....to lights at hitch.....and ground where necessary...Sound about right?I don't think I will need a relay has I only have one trigger(the switch) right?
Thanks for your help!
Josh

Use a relay. Ground the lights "back there" Use the switch to throw a ground, to trigger the relay, to throw 12v to turn on the aux. lights.

This will provide a solid 12v, and be safe as well. Use an illuminated switch, so you know the lights are on/off.

would this be the right way for the relay then?
85-ground
30-fused 12v
87-aux lights
86-switch
Thanks

I would also have to have power at the switch right? along with the wire from 86?
Do you have a diagram of how it should go?
Thanks
Josh

I'm attempting to go one further on this but I will advise you to use relays where applicable and don't bother with body grounds on truck frames - the suck. Always (on the exterior anyway) run the ground back to the neg. terminal on the battery like they do in marine applications. This keeps any problems from cropping up later on.
