Hey guysd, recently moved here to WI from Australia. My partner is having a few problems as she is slightly night blind so I would dearly love to upgrade the lighting in her Sentra. Now, the only that will help now is more lights. But, I'm not sure on the legalities or where to start looking. So heres what I've thought of doind and I've put down the relevant law that I know from Australia if someone could let me know if they are the same or different that would be great.

Spotlights - Higher then 55W only allowed to switch on when High Beam activated

Driving Lights - 55W or less, allowed so long as Low or High Beam is on. No park lights only.

Fog lights, only allowed on during severe weather conditions and only allowed on with low beams

I considered putting in DRLs but I'm not really sure what they are and if they are worth it. I gather that they don't produce much extra light of a nighttime as they are only for the ability of OTHER driveres to see you from afar in the daylight. IS this correct?

You sure are lucky today, I just went over the state laws for someone on another forum. General rules are the same:
Fog Lamps Not to be used with high beams, may be used without headlights IF visibility is really bad
Driving Lamps Not regulated by WI, so the restrictions are from FMVSS 108 which states they are to be used with the high beams only, and aimed as the high beams are
Spot Lamps No more than 2 per vehicle, need to be aimed as the low beams are.
General RestrictionsNo more than 4 auxilary lamps on at a time
DRLs Don't bother, they are on when the real lights are off for the benefit of other drivers
Wisconsin Law wrote:
347.07 Special restrictions on lamps and the use thereof
(1) Whenever a motor vehicle equipped with headlamps also is equipped with any adverse weather lamps, spotlamps or auxiliary lamps, or with any other lamp on the front thereof projecting a beam of intensity greater than 300 candlepower, not more than a total of 4 of any such lamps or combinations thereof on the front of the vehicle shall be lighted at any one time when such vehicle is upon a highway
347.26 Restrictions on certain optional lighting equipment.
(2) SPOTLAMPS
--(a) Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than 2 spotlamps.
--(b) No spotlamp shall be used as a substitute for headlamps. No spotlamp shall be used as an auxiliary driving light on any motor vehicle except when such spotlamp is set or adjusted so that the rays of light are projected directly upon the road surface at a distance not exceeding 150 feet directly in front of the vehicle and to the right of the center of the traveled roadway. No spotlamp shall project any glaring light into the eyes of an approaching driver.
(3) ADVERSE WEATHER LAMPS
--(a) Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than 2 adverse weather lamps which shall be mounted on the front of the vehicle below the level of the centers of the headlamps.
--(b) Adverse weather lamps shall not be used in lieu of headlamps unless absolutely necessary in case of rain, snow, dust or fog and then only when a vehicle is equipped with 2 adverse weather lamps mounted on opposite sides of the front of the vehicle and when both such adverse weather lamps are lighted. Whenever any vehicle is equipped with only one adverse weather lamp, both headlamps of such vehicle shall be lighted at all times when such adverse weather lamp is lighted.

#1 Did you bring the Sentra with you from down under?
#2 Don't forget to change your profile to say you are a cheesehead now
A place to contact for good info and who sells quality lighting is OJ Rallye. He is a little off the wall, but he knows his stuff, only carries good stuff, and is relatively reasonably priced. He is about 45 minutes north of the Milwaukee area.
