Here is a start which you can modify for your needs (taken from here http://sound.westhost.com/project62b.htm):

Bass Beat Extractor

The bass beat extractor is shown in Figure 5, and consists of an automatic gain control circuit followed by a low pass filter. The output from this circuit is fed to the next, which converts the beat into a sharp pulse suitable for triggering the strobe or chaser.

Figure 5 - Bass Beat Extractor

This circuit uses only the +12V supply. The limiter circuit will not win any prizes for linearity or distortion, but this is of no consequence for this purpose.  The diodes are 1N4148, resistors are 1/4W. Capacitors should be rated at 25V minimum.

Prepare your future. It wasn't the lack of stones that killed the stone age.

I just wired up all my LED's w/ proper reisistors in parallel to the outputs on the amp, it got the lows and some loud highs.  It worked well but burnt out a few leds (just the smaller ones).  I heard its bad for amps but had it in my previous car for at least a year w/ no noticable problems.  I put an on off switch and went LED crazy.  Ask around before you use my method
