Hi,

I bought an LED underbody kit a few months back but ran into some issues. The wire that connects the LED strip to the control box is about 2 feet too short. I have a very long car (87 Firebird) and was wondering if I could extend the wires out.

Here is my plan:

Cut the wire, insert a few extra feet of braided wire the same gauge as the existing wire, solder and heatshrink connections between the old and new wire and wrap the new wire with durable and waterproof tape that will protect the new wire.

Has anyone done this before? Is there anything else that I would need to do or anything I am missing here?

Any help would be appreciated.

Seems like you got the right idea. Solder and heatshrink is a must. A good quality electrical tape will be extra insurance.

If you want to go slightly overkill. You could also use some type of sealant on the connections like silicone and build up a nice barrier on either side of your splice. Probably not necessary though.
