I might find the answer before its posted, but heres my question., I just bought a 2001 p71 crown victoria. And it was an ex-trooper car, but -all the lights. Im gonna use it for a winter car and by another one with less miles but around the same year. Now do you think i would need to upgrade the alternator because im thinking it already is a heavy duty one because ex police cars had computers and lights so im thinking a stock Alternator would not have been able to handle al that,. So how do i tell what kind of Alternator it is, a stok one or heavy duty one.

I'd poke around with a flashlight and look for a data plate riveted to the alt.  My guess is it's HO, but I wouldn't go building a giant system w/o knowing for sure.

If you can't find anything on it you might try calling your local ford dealership - ask for parts/service and give them the VIN.  Maybe they can tell you.

Yep, the cop vics have upgraded alternators, because of the lights and computers, video etc. Im 99% sure they are 120amps the other 1% is 150amp. My dad is a fleet coordinator and buys cars for the county cops and I remember hearing they are upgraded. Its heavy duty for sure though.

thanks i also found out that they are 200 amps, and the idle is tuned to keep the alt always rev up high, So im gonna buy another 2001 p71 car, and add new guts and cover and fix all the cop stuff and take it to the paint booth. And then add some serious beatswhat amp is my alternator -- posted image.

Either a 130, 135, or 200amp alternator. You'll be able to tell by the cable sizes.

The 200amp alternator required a larger cable. The one we sell looks like 4 or 2g.
