Since you are mentioning that it is getting hot fast... I am inclined to think that you have the system wired up at 1ohm (all positives and all negatives run together) I've done quite a few installs with the Sony XM series at 4ohms and the clients are fairly abusive to them, but the amp only becomes warm at best.
The sony amp is not meant to do sub-4ohm work (<4ohm) and if you read the fine print, that actually voids the warranty.
Try rewiring the subs to give a 4ohm total load. That should take care of the heat issue. Also since you are on a fairly tight budget, look into the Sony XM2002GTR amp 500w/1200w at 4ohms bridged.
Wire up 2 subs so that the positives and negatives are tied together. Same with the other pair.
Then for Pair 1 attach the positive to the positive on the amp
Pair 1 negative to Pair 2 positive
Then Pair 2 negative to the negative on the amp.
This will create a 4ohm setup that your sony amp will be happy with and not get hot-headed about (sorry... had to)
As for your db, I won't laugh. I have a friend in Alabama running 2 sony 12" in a sealed box off a Sony amp (his sponsor) and in his 89 S10 he's easily hitting 135-140db. Last I heard it was 138.6(not 100% sure) during a local SPL contest. His system is tuned for street bass, but that is still impressive for SPL bass. (Lucky brat also scored 4 PS3-60's with four 20" monitors before they even released to the public. He's building up a full sony sponsored truck using a bed-mod we designed for him.)
For $200, unless you get it off of ebay or something, retail you're not going to get much more power out of an amp. If anything, look into places selling Kicker ZX series amps. Kicker is getting ready to release full scale their new 2008 line of amps, so lots of places will be clearancing the older stuff... don't worry... with the exception of the new Warhammer, the 08 line (vs the 06 line being cleanced now) the changes are almost purely cosmetic. Most users will not notice too many differences between the 2006 and the 2008 line.
If you have a Circuit City nearby, look there first. I went to one local to me and they had the 06ZX10001 (1000rms at 2ohm) for only ~$329. Needless to say, I bought the last one as well as the 350.4 and their 700.5. My partner bought the remaining 750.1s in stock for $260 each.
If you are also looking for new subs, look into their L series. The changes are purely cosmetic, but again clearances will save you some $$$. I saw the 10" L5 sub in a truck box for $210 and the 12" in their standard vented box for $309. The Comp, CVR, and CVT series as far as I am aware will remain the same since the current models were just released beginning of 2007.
I don't have any information on their speakers off the top of my head, but you never know.
I've worked with Hifonics directly before and I have been fairly satisfied with the Hifonics. I cannot fairly say anything about the other brands since I have not had enough personal experience with them to offer a fair opinion.

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.
