have a customer that i have built several systems for in the past, and recently came to me and said he's board with his current setup and needs more.  this guy likes unforgiving, relentless, mind numbing, deafening bass. obviously i dont recommend he be listening to stuff like that non stop--but its his ears and wallet.

so currently we have installed in his 06 ram QC

3 pioneer premier TS-W3001D4 --in a sealed 3cu ft enclosure in back floor firing up

powered by 1 kicker 1200.1 amp

i built and installed this about 10 months ago,  felt the components worked great together and produced excellent output.-- and to my surprise has not blown any woofers to date.

any ideas on improvements, ideally  reusing current equipment?

do you think i can build another box to house 4 of those woofers and still power off that same amp? im thinking that amp is its most effecient with the current setup.

would there be any worthwhile gains in spl using 3 kicker SB sqaure subs, instead of the round premiers?i realize there is greater cone area, but not sure for the money if its worth it.

the customer does not like ported enclosures, and besides with his habit of constantly tilting the system with bass cds etc.. im afraid of unloading and warranteeing subs.

thanks

Josh

In order to get a NOTICEABLE difference in output, you will have to double the number of woofers - that'll be 3dB. If you double the SYSTEM, you'll gain 6dB.
One more woofer will do nothing appreciable, and is tossing good money away. Going from round to square will not provide twice the required cone area, so, that route, too, will be gaining little to nothing. If the Kickers START with a higher efficiency (at LEAST 2 to 3dB higher, to start) then you could realize considerable gains, that way.
You need more efficient woofers, AND more power. The Pioneers are not where I would look. I'm sure you will get some input as to where to look, from other members here... I unfortunately will not be able to help you much more than this. I build SQ systems, not SPL systems.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I mean - it occurs to me - as I read what he's got running- that perhaps he's just progessively losing his hearing.  Ten months to get "bored" of that that type of output seems - uhh - odd.

You COULD get more efficiency - but his subs are pretty efficient already - and you won't get more efficient than that and retain much in the way of power handling - 89db for 12's isn't terribly low - and a Kicker 1200 isn't what I would instlal in my car but I'm sure it's loud.

Um.  Yea he's going deaf.

To to address your specific questions:

Yea this will make minimal difference.  I'm not sure why the word "efficiency" would even make it into the goals for this install.

Given your goals cone area would be of primary consideration.  But wouldn't recommend Kicker for anything.

You mean unload like take them out of a sealed enclosure or unload like resell them?

Eitherway - ported enclosures are about the only place this guy has to go - if he doesn't like a ported enclosure, but is a basshed - then he probably hasn't heard one built properly.  Tune one @ 1.5 - 1.75 cft/per sub @ 28hz or so.

Tell him "I can make it louder with a sealed enclosure but not without new amplifers and new subs, which would, at this point, cost in excess of $2000."  Which would be a true statement, and probably not leave you much profit margin anyway.

Or you can say, 'I can try a computer-designed vented enclosure that will greatly extend low-end bass response."  That's how I'd sell it.  At whatever volume he's at its not like he's listenening carefully for transients. . .
