Hello, I am wondering if a car battery put into a scooter/moped can run a nice sound system.

I heard this site is where I should go when asking about the technical aspects of hooking up something to a battery.

We need to know a little bit more about the electrical system on the scooter. Does it have a 6 volt system? Does it have a 12 volt system?

Whatever voltage it is, without a generator capable of powering the system, no, you can't do it... It's the SAME situation as adding a second battery or a larger capacity battery to your car, without an appropriately sized alternator.

Even in a scooter, the generator is the source of all of the power used. This is why you'll only see VERY sparse electrical loads - nothing but a headlight and taillight usually, possibly an ignition coil (maybe, unless it uses a magneto).

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

we had a guys yeas ago take a golf cart and put a small motor cycle engine it it. he had 2 10s and a small 500 watt amp. some mids, and tweets. haemphyst has pointed out you still need a charging system. which this guy did had to still do. wish i had pics this thing was sick. why did he do it? some one said it couldnt. this guy also grad from mit end of story there. some one else told my grease monkey dad you cant do anything with a ford pinto deedeedee. so pops put a ford mustang 6 cyl in it a shift kit, craiger mags the nine yards. sickest pos i ever saw lol.

My Dad has a Honda Silver Wing, and a Vespa MP3 Scooter. People call them both mopeds. The Silver Wing is a 600cc twin that is capable of 115 MPH. People still call it a Moped. The Silver Wing is equipped with an Alpine Deck, 2 speakers mounted to the handlebars, and a PAC IR repeater, and a lanyard mounted remote control. Radio is mounted under the seat in the storage compartment. No electrical modifications were made. It has been on there for at least 3 years.

Crunk may have a Honda Helix or some other 12 volt scooter that will be able to power an audio system. Those things were called mopeds all of the time.

I agree with haemphyst about considering the scooter/moped's stock charging system.

A larger battery would allow you to play the radio for a longer time with the engine off, and might help out a little bit at stoplights where the alternator/generator isn't making its full output...........but just like haemphyst said, you still need a charging system that'll keep up with the audio system that's installed.

If it were me, I'd just go ahead and install whatever you want, take a local ride for a little while, and see how it goes.

Also, another thing to consider, is the stock battery sealed?

Most car batteries aren't sealed, and if the moped were to fall over on its side (or be involved in an accident), the car battery could leak...............I guess if the stock battery isn't sealed, then it's already considered to be OK.

However, if the stock battery is sealed, and you're going to replace it with a car battery, I'd look for a sealed one, something like an Optima or similar.
