stereo or monarual phase on sub out?

I just hooked up my first sub today. My Eclipse CD8445 has an option of "stereo" or "monaural" for the sub-out. I have one JL10w6 hooked up to a mono amp but when I select "monaural" the sub sounds worse than when in "stereo" mode. Can some one tell me the correct selection for this setting on this deck with the set-up I described? Many thanks in advance for the help.Eric

By "worse" what do you mean? Does the woofer play half as loud, sound distorted, hit some beats but misses others, etc? Which amp do you have, and how is it connected to the receiver? I can't find a copy of the Eclipse manual, but the manuals for their more recent CD receivers don't describe what that setting actually does. Do we get a mono signal coming from only one RCA jack on the receiver? Do we get a mono signal from both jacks? I'm not sure exactly. But! The Alpine manual shows something that helps. On page 10 of the manual downloaded from Alpine's website, it says both RCA jacks must have signal, not just one, otherwise low output may occur. So it looks like the Eclipse is putting audio into only one of the RCA jacks and that is causing the Alpine to throw a fit. Since you already have two RCA runs, use both and set the Eclipse to "stereo". If you really wanted to, for troubleshooting sake, you could put a y-adapter on the Alpine like the drawing shows in their manual and see what happens. -JustinMalcom: "This is the captain. If you're getting a reduced volume on one setting vs. the other, then set it to the louder one. Without getting all textbook with formulas and whatnot, just think about it...if the sub plays Xdbs on one setting, then it's capable of playing that loud. If it plays roughly half as loud with the other setting, then there is some sort of interference going on...
