I have a problem and am hoping I don't have any major issues. I recently installed speakers and a new head unit in my brothers 92 Accord. The head unit is a Pioneer deh2900mp with Sony 6*9s in the rear and 6.5s in the doors. I soldered every connection and followed that up with heat shrink tubing which included the speaker wires and all harness connections. This setup worked well for what my brother needs except a couple days ago everything quit working after he got back into his car after doing some shopping. It worked when he parked his car and now nothing.

The head unit powers up and all functions and buttons work, just no sound is being outputted through the speakers. I stripped some heat shrink tubing back from the harness behind the head unit and got a reading of about 10millivolts from the left rear speaker wires. At the speaker in the trunk I get the same voltage. I also measured the resistance of the left rear speaker and came up with 3.5 ohms. I do not know what the problem is but am hoping that the speakers are not out.

Any advise would be highly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Did you have your meter set to DC volts or AC volts? When you came up with the 10 Millivolts, did you check from one speaker wire to the other speaker wire, of from one wire to ground?

The meter was set to dc volts. I arrived at the 10 millivolts while checking from wire to wire. I just went out to the car and checked the positive wire and tested it across a ground and arrived at a similar value.

When checking from wire to ground of the vehicle you should get between 5 to 6 volts with the car not running. Either there is a bad solder joint on the output chip in the radio, a grounded speaker wire or a defective output chip in the radio.

Sorry, but I should have included this in my original post, but I did plug my Pioneer deck into his car and encountered the same condition. His radio however did work in my car. Thank you very much for your help. I will investigate the speaker wires further. Would one grounded speaker wire take out all of the speakers? Please excuse me for my ignorance of car audio.

Some of the newer decks have Smart output chips, if they see a shorted speaker or a grounded speaker wire they will protect themself and not play. If the speaker that you checked is reading around 4 ohms and you know that your brother was not abusing the system, chances of all 4 speakers having gone out at the same time is slim to none.

i think one of the speaker wires is shorting out.

Hey coolhandz, while you are checking the things i mentioned, maybe you should check for a shorted out speaker wire too.
